Yes, they make night driving harder. A cloudy lens scatters the light instead of focusing it on the road, so you see less far ahead and less of the roadside, and the scattered light can add glare for oncoming drivers. If your headlights are hazy, restoring or replacing them is a real safety fix, not just a cosmetic one.
What a cloudy lens does to your light
A headlight is designed to put a shaped beam of light on the road: bright and far ahead, with a sharp edge so it does not shine into oncoming drivers' eyes. A clear lens lets that beam out the way it was designed.
A yellow, cloudy lens works like frosted glass. Less of the light gets through, and what does get through is scattered in every direction. The beam loses its reach and its sharp cut-off, so the road ahead is dimmer and the light spills where it is not useful.
What you notice from the driver's seat
- Signs, lane lines and road edges show up later than they used to
- Low beams feel weak on unlit roads
- You reach for the high beams more often
- Rain and wet roads feel darker than they should
- New bulbs did not make much difference
It affects other drivers too
Scattered light does not stay below the beam's cut-off line. Some of it goes up and out, toward oncoming drivers and the mirrors of cars in front of you. That is one reason a car with hazy headlights can seem glary even though its lights are actually dimmer on the road.
Where it matters most around here
Plenty of roads around Geist, Fortville, McCordsville and northern Hamilton County have little or no street lighting, and the stretches between towns get dark fast. From November to February, many people in Fishers and Carmel drive to and from work in the dark both ways. That is when weak headlights matter most.
Why brighter bulbs are not the answer
Putting brighter or aftermarket bulbs behind a cloudy lens mostly makes the scatter and glare worse. Plug-in LED bulbs in housings designed for halogen bulbs can also throw the beam pattern off. Fix the lens first. If the light is still weak once the lens is clear, then look at bulbs, aim and wiring.
Check your aim after any fix
Headlights that point too low cut your view, and ones that point too high dazzle other drivers. If your car has had front-end work, or the beams look uneven on a garage door, have the aim checked.
What to do
If the haze is on the outside of the lens, restoration brings the light back for a fraction of the price of new headlights. We restore both headlights for $99 at your home or office, in about 30 to 60 minutes, sealed with GlasWeld's UV-cured clear coat and backed by a 1-year warranty. Call or text (317) 707-1225.
Can you fail an inspection for cloudy headlights?
Indiana does not require a routine yearly safety inspection for most passenger cars, so for most drivers here the question rarely comes up. Headlights still have to work properly under traffic law, and badly dimmed or damaged lights can draw attention. If you are moving to a state with safety inspections, or your car is being inspected for another reason, clear lenses avoid any argument.
Simple ways to check your headlights at home
- Park facing a garage door or wall at night, about 10 to 25 feet away, and turn on the low beams
- A clear lens gives a bright, defined pool of light with a sharp top edge
- A cloudy lens gives a dimmer, blotchy pool with a fuzzy edge and a glow above it
- Compare left and right: one much dimmer than the other points to a lens, bulb or aim problem
